The second a newborn is placed on her mother’s chest, their pituitary gland floods their bloodstream with the hormone oxytocin. The result: the triggering of an instinctual, lifetime craving for love-hormone which can only be satisfied by social interaction.1,2 From that moment onwards, social interaction will play a highly influential role in that child’s development, morbidity, mortality, mental health and even their ability to exhibit prosocial behaviour like empathy.2  

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared February 11 the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.1 With science and gender equality both key international development goals, engaging women and girls in science has been an important area of focus worldwide in recent decades; however, as the infographic below demonstrates, there’s still a lot of work to be done.2,3 

International Women’s Day – a Day to Celebrate How Well We’ve Managed to Cope Over the Past Year!

Today is International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’. The IWD website states, ‘A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change’.  

I wanted to write about this challenge, of achieving gender parity, calling out bias, and finally reaching equality.  

Large Event Planning, or Embracing Chaos Theory

Organizing large events presents a unique challenge that requires a special type of person, that’s for sure. At AS&K we are lucky enough to have more than our fair share.

While each event is a unique educational experience for participants, we’ve noticed there are some common features when it comes to event planning, and these are the learnings our exceptional team has managed to master.
